Mudflat walking and sailing:
Boating, beaching and wander over the mudflats
The Wadloopcentrum Pieterburen regularly combine mudflat walking and boat trips. We have designed these walks for the growing number of people who want to enjoy the mudflats but would rather sail, beach and from there wander to look for seals or shells.
With the Wadloopcentrum Pieterburen this is all possible. We offer the following combined mudflat walking, boating and beaching tours. :
- West Beach Day Tour.
- Seal watching tour at Het Rif and the Engelsmanplaat .
- Mudflat walking and boating to Simonszand.
Explanation of symbols :
The meeting point is out ship De Boschwad or De Noordster that are moored in the fishing port, Lauwersoog. For the correct clothing and preparation see : Mudflat walking information.
Journey Description :
After in signing and registration, the ship leaves for the bank Het Lutjewad. There maybe some mudflat walkers that will dropped off at different intervals and mudflats, to walk to Schiermonikoog. Afterwards it will continue towards Het Lutjewad.
When we have arrived at Het Lutjewad, you will disembark, via a ladder and walk for a short time through the water. Under instruction from the tour guide you will go on a walk over the mudflats. For those who want to they can walk through the mud and for those that don’t they will be able to walk around it. Then: onto find the seals! These will be sunbathing behind sand banks. If we make sure to stay quiet, they will continue to lie still and will not get scared.
We will complete a wide curve around the seals before returning back to the vessel and make our way back to Lauwersoog.

After you have signed in and registered, the boat will leave for the West Beach of Schiermonikoog. Some people may be dropped off at different banks or intervals, who wish to walk to Schiermonikoog. Then the boat will continue to the West Beach of Schiermonikoog.
You will have to depart the boat, via a ladder and will have to walk a short distance through the water to reach the long strip of beach.
Because there has been an old sand bank that has grown together to the beach of Schiermonikoog, it has now become the widest beach of the Wadden islands.
The tour goes north ways. On the way we will go through a gully and come across the first dunes. Slightly later there is the beach transition through the dunes and we will walk for a quarter of an hour to reach the village. In the village you will be able to have a few hours to yourself. Just have a wander or find somewhere nice to eat, you choose. At a given time we will meet somewhere in the town and get the busses back to where the boat stands waiting.
For those who wish to we can potentially replace the beach tour to a combined tour to walk from the East to the West coast of Schiermonikoog. If you wish to do this just ask and ensure to take extra clothes, towels and a plastic bag.

After you have signed in and registered, the sip will leave for the bird sanctuary Het Rif. There is a possibility that some people may be dropped off at a different bank.
You will have to depart the ship via a ladder and will have to walk a short distance through the water to reach the bird sanctuary Het Rif. This is a spot in the Waddensea where a lot of birds have nests or a resting place therefore it is not permitted to come there the whole year round. That is why we organize these tours only later in the year when the breeding is over.
Originally Het Rif was only a bank but it became bigger and bigger and now there are some small dunes as well. During our walk we will take care not disturbing the birds. Maybe after some time we will see some seals, resting on the bank. We keep our distance there too.
We have to cross a former gully which means that there might be some real mudwalking.
Then we arrive at another bank, Engelsmanplaat. Years ago there were dunes here as well but now they are gone. But there is a remarkable house there. In summer some bird watchers live here to investigate and to protect the birds. Is we are lucky we can have a look in their house, 3,5 meters above sea level.
Then we have to walk a few kilometers to our ship.
When everyone is aboard we will sail to the sealbank Kuipersplaat. If we do not disturb them and stay quiet they will not move and stay lying where they are. Maybe we can get close to them and you will be able to take pictures. After this we will sail back to Lauwersoog.
Duration: Walking: 2.5 hours. Walking and sailing : 6 hours

After you have signed in and registered, a bus will come and take us to the Negenburen in Pieterburen. When we exit the bus we will walk to the dunes where we will start this beautiful combined tour. We will then walk over the relatively hard sand flats to the first gully, Het Robbengat. We will walk through here and the water will reach our waists. We will then continue the walk towards Pieterburenwad. We will then follow a fairway, de Zuidoorst Lauwers, in a northerly direction until we cant go any further. This is where we will be picked up by the boat and taken and dropped off at Simonszand.
Previously, Simonszand could be reached by foot. However the mudflat is continuously changing and for a few years we have not been able to walk to Simonszand because of a newly formed trench, which cuts Simonszand off from the other mudflat.
At Simonszand we will leave the boat again but this time you will not need to take your rucksack and can leave it behind on the boat. You will be able to wander around on this mudflat by yourself or you can go with the guides, who will know where seals might be lying. After this we will take you to the North sea beach. When we are returning to the boat we will take you will be able to see the harbour mouth of Zuidoost Lauwers and we can see Rottumerplaat close up. After we have returned to the boat we will return over the sea to the starting point of the day: the harbour of Lauwersoog.
